A Masterclass in Visual Effects Filmmaking
Creative media students at West Nottinghamshire College recently had the opportunity to learn from Steve Clarke, a visual effects specialist known for his work on several films — including the cult-favourite “mockbuster” Sharknado 2.
Steve, who co-runs the design company CKVFX, visited the college to share his expertise in digital effects, film design and the creative process behind low-budget, high-impact movie productions.
Learning From the Artist Behind the Mockbusters
With years of experience in the film industry, Steve has contributed to a range of VFX-heavy movies. His session gave students insider knowledge on how visual effects are planned, created and integrated into final film sequences.
He discussed the challenges of producing effects for fast-paced, imaginative films and explained how creativity and problem-solving play a huge role in successful filmmaking.
Students Pitch Their Film Ideas
During the workshop, students presented their own concept ideas for potential short films. They explained how they would use visual effects tools and filmmaking techniques they’re currently learning.
Steve reviewed 12 different student concepts, offering tailored feedback and guidance on everything from story development to VFX execution.
“It was good to present to Steven as we were able to get his professional feedback and his insight into the best techniques,”— Daniel Day, student
Daniel added that hearing from a working artist helped him understand how to overcome challenges when learning new or updated software.
Expert Insight From an Industry Professional
Steve was impressed by the ideas and ambition shown by the students:
“It’s been really insightful seeing the students’ really creative ideas for movies. They’re clearly getting great tutoring on the available software and applying this with their imaginations to come up with some great content for this style of film.”
His input reinforced the importance of combining technical ability with creativity — a message that resonated strongly with the students.
Inspiring the Next Generation of VFX Artists
The visit provided an invaluable chance for learners to gain real industry perspective, develop confidence and strengthen the concepts behind their coursework projects.
Opportunities like these help bridge the gap between college learning and the film industry, showing students how their skills can grow into exciting creative careers.
